The height adjustable steering column (24) is fitted with a cover (28) provided with a pre-determined breaking line at the front and accommodating an airbag (30) as well as the gas generating and release mechanism (32). When the steering column (24) is adjusted in height to the size of the driver (D) the knee restraint system is also moved and always kept in a position with maximum efficacy in case of an impact. All areas of the lower (20) and upper dashboard (22) are still available for various other purposes.
