Freely-ejecting starter for an internal combustion engine comprises a starter pinion (11) coaxially surrounding a drive shaft. The starter pinion is positioned with a hollow shaft (111) on the drive shaft so that it can be axially displaced, shifted with a pinion rim (112) formed on the front end of the hollow shaft into a gear rim of the internal combustion engine, and placed with a stop formed inside the hollow shaft onto a counter-stop fixed on the drive shaft. The hollow shaft has an internal diameter that remains constant over the shaft length. The stop is formed by a stop ring (23) surrounding the drive shaft with play and arranged in the hollow shaft so that it cannot be axially displaced. Preferred Features: The stop ring is fixed in the hollow shaft using a spring ring (25) which lies in an annular groove in the inner wall of the hollow shaft and in the outer casing of the stop ring.
