Aluminum alloy contains (in weight %) 4.2-4.8 Zn, 3.0-7.0 Si, 0.8-1.2 Cu, 0.7-1.3 Pb, 0.12-0.18 Mg, 0-0.3 Mn, 0-0.2 Ni, 0.05-0.1 Zr, 0-0.05 Ti, 0-0.4 Fe, 0-0.2 Sn and a balance of Al and the usual impurities. Independent claims are also included for: (a) a sliding element made from the aluminum alloy; (b) a composite material comprising a protective layer made from steel and a further layer made from the aluminum alloy; and (c) a process for the production of the aluminum alloy. Preferred Features: The further layer is formed as a bearing layer or a binding layer of a sliding bearing.
