PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer in which a loaded ink ribbon cartridge can be judged surely while simplifying the arrangement and operation. SOLUTION: Only a color ink ribbon cassette is oscillated by an oscillation mechanism and a monochromatic ink ribbon cassette is not oscillated. A decision can be made whether the loaded ink ribbon cassette is a color ink ribbon cassette or a monochromatic ink ribbon cassette by detecting oscillation of the color ink ribbon cassette through a sensor member 420.
