PURPOSE: A pharmaceutical composition containing an extract of Pericarpium zanthoxyli is provided. The composition is effective in prophylaxis and treatment of cerebral degenerative disorders and has a brain cell-protecting activity. Therefore, it is useful for those who want to enhance memory. CONSTITUTION: The pharmaceutical composition for protecting brain cell and improving memory contains 0.5 to 50% by weight of a Pericarpium zanthoxyli extract, additionally a carrier, an excipient, a diluent or a mixture thereof, based on the total weight of the composition. The Pericarpium zanthoxyli extract is obtained by extracting Pericarpium zanthoxyli in an organic solvent selected from the group consisting of C1-4 lower alcohol, acetone, chloroform, methylene chloride, ether, ethyl acetate and a mixture thereof, controlling pH 2 to 4, reextracting with chloroform and fractioning. |
