PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ethynylnaphthalene derivative useful as a production intermediate for liquid crystal compounds. SOLUTION: This ethynylnaphthalene derivative is represented by general formula (I) (wherein, Y denotes bromine atom, iodine atom, p-toluenesulfonyl group, methanesulfonyl group or trifluoromethanesulfonyl group; X<1> , X<2> , X<3> , X<4> , X<5> and X<6> denote each independently hydrogen atom or fluorine atom; and at least one of X<1> , X<2> , X<3> , X<4> , X<5> and X<6> denotes fluorine atom).
