PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a manufacturing method for lightweight artificial aggregate excellent in shape-retaining properties during the period after a granulation stage until a sintering stage and to provide the lightweight artificial aggregate formed by this manufacturing method and high in crashing strength. SOLUTION: Pregelatinized starch having >=15 ml/g and <=50 ml/g degree of swelling and bentonite are added to a raw material of aggregate and the resulting material is granulated to obtain raw pellets and then the raw pellets are sintered to obtain the lightweight artificial aggregate.
