PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a zoom lens constituted of three groups, the whole lens length of which is shortened, having improved portability and suitable for an electronic still camera, and to obtain optical equipment provided with the zoom lens. SOLUTION: As for the zoom lens provided with a 1st lens group having a negative refractive power, a 2nd lens group having a positive refractive power and a 3rd lens group having a positive refractive power in this order from an object side, and for varying the power by changing a distance between respective lens groups, the 1st lens group is provided with one or more negative lenses and one or more positive lenses, the 2nd lens group is constituted of a positive lens whose both lens surfaces are aspherical, a negative lens and a positive lens in this order from the object side and the 3rd lens group is provided with one or more positive lenses.
