PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device in which utilization efficiency of a backlight is increased by contriving the constitution of a cholesteric liquid crystal filter and by which bright display can be performed. SOLUTION: In the liquid crystal display device containing a liquid crystal display element wherein a liquid crystal layer 3 is interposed between transparent substrates 1 and 2 and voltage applying electrodes and driving circuits are provided, an illumination light source 10, an illumination side circularly polarizing means 8 and an observer side circularly polarizing plate 9, a semitransmission type cholesteric liquid crystal color filter 4 for reflecting a portion of light of a wavelength region of each R, G and B, transmitting the rest of the light and reflecting light of wavelength regions of other colors in R, G and B for pixels of R, G and B and an absorption type color filter 5 for transmitting the light of a wavelength region of each R, G and B and for absorbing the light of wavelength regions of other colors are disposed in a row on the illumination light incident side of the liquid crystal layer 3 and on the observer side thereof, respectively. |
