<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To resolve the problem that a desired polarized light separating function cannot be obtained because an internal stress occurs to cause birefringence of incident light in the case that a polarizing beam splitter had a temperature difference. SOLUTION: With respect to a color separating and synthesizing optical system having a plurality of image display elements 12 for individually modulating a plurality of color light obtained by color separation of illuminating light from a light source 1 and a polarizing beam splitter 11 which is formed like a prism having a polarized light separation face and performs at least one of color light separation of illuminating light and synthesis of a plurality of color light modulated by respective image display elements, the color separating and synthesizing optical system is provided with a plurality temperature varying means (cooling means or heating means) which are arranged so as to face or come into contact with difference faces of the polarizing beam splitter and change the temperature of the polarizing beam splitter, a temperature detection means (temperature sensor) for detecting the temperature of the polarizing beam splitter, and a control means (temperature control circuit) for controlling the temperature varying means on the basis of the detection temperature of the temperature detection means.</p> |
