PURPOSE: An apparatus for detecting short of an ignition coil is provided to allow for ease of detection by using the potential difference between both ends of the ignition coil. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus comprises a transistor(21) which is switches by the ignition signal supplied from an engine control unit(10); a resistor(23) connected to the output side of the transistor, which passes the static power supplied from an external source; a driving transistor(25) connected to the output sides of the resistor and the transistor, which is provided with the static power supplied from an external source in accordance with the switching state of the transistor, and drives an ignition driver; and a micro computer(27) connected between the output side of a battery and the input side of the driving transistor, which determines short of an ignition coil(C) by detecting the potential difference between both ends of the ignition coil in accordance with the switching state of the driving transistor.
