PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate useless generation or supply of print data by determining the timing from generation to supply of print data appropriately in relation to the sheet type detecting or judging operation when the printer can perform the sheet type detecting operation only after receiving a print instruction and feeding the sheet by a specified amount. SOLUTION: The printer is arranged such that detection information of a print medium being carried in response to a print start command can be notified to a host unit. In the host unit, the detection information is accepted and the type of the print medium is judged and generation or supply of print data is effected only after the type of sheet is determined.
