PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarizing illuminaire free from the degradation in capacity of a halfwave phase plate and a projection display device using it. SOLUTION: With respect to the polarizing illuminator which converts light of a light source to single polarized light to illuminate a body to be illuminated, light shielding parts 37 which intercept polarized light in a prescribed oscillation direction out of light from exit faces 30a of an integrator 30 which divides incident light of the light source into a plurality of luminous fluxes and emits them are arranged between the exit faces 30a of the integrator 30 and incident faces 40a of a polarizing beam splitter array 40 having halfwave phase plates 42 regularly arranged, correspondingly to and apart from the exit faces 30a of the integrator 30 and the incident faces 40a of the polarizing beam splitter array.
