PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technology capable of storing a specified amount of heat in a heat storage device while preventing an internal combustion engine from being overheated in the internal combustion engine with the heat storage device. SOLUTION: This internal combustion engine with the heat storage device comprises a heat medium circulating routes 2a and 2b circulating through the internal combustion engine 1 and heat medium passages 4 and 6 for cooling for returning heat medium from the heat medium circulating routes 2a and 2b through a cooling means 5 to the heat medium circulating routes 2a and 2b. The engine comprises a passage open/close valve 7 for opening or closing the heat medium passages 4 and 6 for cooling. When high temperature cooling water must be stored in the heat storage device 13, the opening of the passage open/close valve 7 is prohibited until the temperature of the heat medium increases to a specified value or higher.
