PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately determine the condition of atomization of the fuel of a fuel injection type internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: The fuel injection type internal combustion engine has an air/ fuel ratio control device for controlling the quantity of the fuel injection by the feedback of a signal from an air/fuel ratio sensor mounted on an exhaust pathway. In the engine, the condition of atomization of the injected fuel is diagnosed based on the step response of the signal of the air/fuel ratio sensor when the air/fuel ratio is changed. When the atomization of the injected fuel is advanced, the output value of the air/fuel ratio sensor has a good responsiveness because the combustion is performed well; when the atomization is not advanced sufficiently, the responsiveness is worse. Accordingly, the condition of atomization of the injected fuel can accurately be diagnosed by determining the condition of the step response of the air/fuel ratio sensor.
