PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a wear resistant composite material which is improved in bending strength, impact value and electric conductivity and is suitable, e.g. for a sliding plate member for pantograph, as the wear resistant material using a carbonaceous material. SOLUTION: In a case, a mixture is prepared by mixing water and a binder (combining material) into a graphite granular material, and the case including this mixture is set to a preliminary forming machine. Thereafter, the mixture is formed by the preliminary forming machine, to form a preliminarily formed body. Then, the obtained preliminarily formed body is held into a furnace 22 together with the case and an atmosphere in the furnace is heated and the preliminarily formed body is burnt to produce a block. Thereafter, the block together with the case are taken out from the furnace and set to a press machine, and after pouring molten copper into the case, the molten copper is impregnated into the block by pushing down and pressing the molten metal in the case.
