PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the image quality of a displayed image by reducing a stain on the displayed image. SOLUTION: A sheet-like part 5 constituted of optical material and equivalent to lenses for glasses is positioned in front of user's eyes placed at the exit pupil P of the image combiner 1 when in use. The light is guided to the user's eye by the combiner 1 while superposing the light from an image display element 2 on the light transmitted through the sheet-like part 5 so that the light may pass through the thick sheet-like part 5 from ahead of the sheet-like part 5. The light from the image display element 2 is refracted/reflected by a reflection type HOE 6 in the sheet-like part 5, thereafter, the light reaches the user's eyes. As for the light having a prescribed wavelength and advancing from the center AO of the display part of the image display element 2 toward the center PO of the exit pupil P, the absolute value of a difference between the incident angle of the light on the HOE surface and the refraction/reflection angle of the light is controlled to be <=3 deg. when the light is refracted/reflected by the reflection type HOE 6.
