1292191 Coating process AGFA-GEVAERT AG 4 March 1970 10352/70 Heading D1L Apparatus for coating web materials, particularly with photographic emulsion, as shown, in which the web 1 is moved under the roller 2. The emulsion is supplied through supply pipe 3 to the coating device via distributor 4. Excess emulsion discharges over overflow edge 5 and is removed by pipe 6. A layer of emulsion is formed on the web in the tapering wedge shaped gap 7, forming a thicker coating than required. The final coating is formed by stripping off excess coating at the gap 8 between the web 1 and casting straight edge 9, by the action of air moving tangentially past the web into chambers 10 and 12. The air is drawn by suction past constriction 11 into chamber 12 and down pipe 13, where a baffle 14 is situated, the ratio of pressures on the side nearest the suction means to that nearest the gap being 2:1, in order to stabilize the air pressure at the gap, and produce a level surface on the coating. Emulsion removed by the air stream discharges from pipe 15. |
