摘要 PURPOSE: A method for constructing a binary plane for motion search and a motion estimator using the method are provided to adaptively distribute motion search regions according to hierarchies of input images to reduce the amount of calculations and the number of bits. CONSTITUTION: A motion estimator includes a wavelet transformation unit(100) for transforming an input image of the current frame into sub-images with multiple resolutions having a hierarchical structure, a frame storage unit(500) for storing the image of the previous frame as a reference image, and a binary plane construction unit(200) for constructing a binary plane for deciding whether or not motion search is carried out using the current frame image wavelet-transformed and the reference image. The motion estimator further includes a motion searching unit(300) for searching motion for each hierarchy of the current frame image according to the binary plane to obtain a motion vector, a predicted image synthesizing unit(400) for synthesizing a predicted image using the motion vector and the binary plane, a subtracter(700) for calculating a difference between the current frame image and the predicted image, and a reference image composition unit(600) for composing a reference image using the difference image and the predicted image and providing the reference image as the reference image of the previous frame.
