PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for identifying an agent which binds to and/or modulates an exopeptidase or endopeptidase, preferably human soluble secreted endopeptidase (SEP), oxytocinase, neutral endopeptidase (NEP), or non-human SEP. SOLUTION: This method comprises contacting the agent with a polypeptide encoded by a polynucleotide sequence having specific sequences and preferably determining whether the agent binds to and/or modulates the polypeptide. Preferably, this method is a method to be used for detecting the agent in the presence of a substrate peptide labelled with at least one fluorescent donor dye and at least one fluorescent acceptor dye, with a competitive binding fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) assay.
