731,322. Setting-up boxes. FILMER, Ltd., R. H., and FILMER, J. W. April 20, 1954 [April 17, 1953 ; Aug. 12, 1953], Nos. 10590/53 and 22206/53. Class 18. An apparatus for securing the folded parts of cardboard boxes comprises a U-shaped support member 12 mounted to slide towards presser jaws 2, 3, the upper jaw 2 being fixed. The folded up box is placed on the support 12 with its overlapping adhesive coated flaps at one end uppermost, and the support is advanced towards the jaws. The box sides enter between guides 26, 27 and the lower jaw, and a pivoted plate 13 carrying deflectors 21-221 engages the box and extension flap 16 and initiates its inward folding. This folding is completed by the further forward movement of the support and by actuation of the jaws to bond the flap 16 over flaps on the box side walls. The box may be reversed to complete its other end or the machine may have a second pair of jaws (not shown) for engaging the other end. The machine may be power driven. One of the jaws may have a working surface formed of a series of resilient pads or strips. The jaws may have heating elements for activating adhesive. |
