PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize an ultrasonic diagnostic instrument which unnecessitates the adjustment of gain and contrast when a gamma curve is adjusted. SOLUTION: The ultrasonic diagnostic instrument is provided with an image quality adjusting circuit 15. The image quality adjusting circuit 15 includes a contrast adjusting part 31, a gain adjusting part 32 and a gamma curve adjusting part 33 as an image quality changing means. The circuit 15 is also provided with a gain side luminance detector 34 for detecting luminance in the center part of an input/output characteristic after adjusting gain by the gain adjusting part 32, a gamma side luminance detector 35 for detecting luminance in the center of the input/output characteristic after adjusting gamma curve by the gamma curve adjusting part 33, a luminance difference detector 36 for comparing two kinds of luminance detected by the detectors 34 and 35 and detecting the luminance difference and a gain/contrast adjusting part 37 (a lightness correcting means) for correcting gain or contrast for the portion of the luminance difference which is detected by the detector 36.
