PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cleaning medium for a magnetic recording apparatus, in which the cleaning power for an MR head is high and in which there is no damage to the MR head and the head abrasion is little. SOLUTION: In the cleaning medium for the magnetic recording apparatus, which is constituted by providing on a nonmagnetic supporting body a lower layer coating layer mainly including a nonmagnetic inorganic powder and a binder and by providing a cleaning layer thereon including a ferromagnetic powder, an inorganic powder, and the binder, the cleaning medium for the magnetic recording apparatus is characterized in that the value (A) which is represented by (A)=R/T is 0.5-2, where R is the maximum particle diameter of the inorganic powder included in the cleaning layer and T is the thickness of the cleaning layer, and the C/Fe peak ratio of the surface of the cleaning layer according to the Auger electron spectroscopy is 10-40.
