System and process for the purification of exhaust gases from internal combustion engines, particularly for the elimination of particulate contamination from diesel engines

The purification system comprises a particle filter to entrap particles in the exhaust gases which can be regenerated by burning off the particles by means of a fuel supplied and temperature increase of the filter, a fuel injection system to the engine combustion chamber comprising a main injection and a secondary injection to increase the temperature of the filter and a fuel injection system to the exhaust duct upstream of the filter. The purification system comprises: (a) a particle filter to entrap particles in the exhaust gases which can be re-generated by burning off the particles by means of a fuel supplied and temperature increase of the filter; (b) a fuel injection system to the engine combustion chamber comprising a main injection and a secondary injection to increase the temperature of the filter; and (c) a fuel injection system to the exhaust duct upstream of the filter. When a re-generation is necessary, fuel can be supplied to the combustion chamber when the bed temperature of the filter is greater or equal to a primary temperature, and fuel may be supplied to the exhaust duct when the temperature of the gases is greater or equal to a secondary temperature and the bed temperature is greater or equal to a third temperature.
