PURPOSE: A method of searching cells in a UMTS system is provided to compare signals exceeding a certain reference value among calculated signals, and to obtain timing offsets of a base station adjacent to a terminal, thereby searching the cells in an asynchronous mobile communication system where the timing offsets do not exist. CONSTITUTION: A UMTS system initializes hardware and software parameters for window cell searching(200). The system searches the first active sector among sectors of an active set(202). The system decides whether a searching process for the operating active sector is completed(206). If so, the system evaluates a searched result, and searches remaining active sectors of the active set(224). The system searches whether to enable searching candidate sectors when the searching for all the active sectors is completed(208). If at least one candidate sector exists, the system searches the first candidate sector. The system decides whether the searching for the candidate sector is completed(214). If so, the system evaluates a searched result and searches remaining candidate sectors of a candidate set(222). If the searching for all the candidate sectors is completed, the system searches a neighboring sector(220). When the searching for the neighboring sector is completed, the system evaluates a searched result.
