PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic head capable of reducing flaws of the front surfaces of an upper shield layer and a lower shield layer of a magnetic detection element, and capable of preventing the short circuit between the upper shield layer or the lower shield layer and an electrode layer. SOLUTION: In an end surface 26b of the facing side of an insulating material layer 26 to a recording medium, the width E1 of an exposed surface 23a of the lower shield layer 23 with respect to the track width direction is made smaller than the overall width E2 of the lower shield layer 23 with respect to the track width direction, and the width F1 of an exposed surface 27a of the upper shield layer 27 with respect to the track width direction is made smaller than the overall width F2 of the upper shield layer 27 with respect to the track width direction. Therefore, only a part of the front surfaces of the lower shield layer 23 and the upper shield layer 27 is exposed in the end surface 26b, and the flaws and the residual abrasive grains of the surfaces of the lower shield layer 23 and the upper shield layer 27 can be reduced.
