PURPOSE: A motion vector estimating method and an apparatus suitable for the method are provided to reduce a period of time required for calculating motion vectors and processing time of a motion-picture encoder. CONSTITUTION: The (K-1)th frame and the Kth frame are divided into blocks having NxN pixels(202), and the blocks are transformed through discrete cosine transform or wavelet transform. A search region(206) with the size of WxW (W>N) is decided in the (K-1)th frame, NxN block(204) having optimum similarity for NxN block in the Kth frame is found in the search region of the (K-1)th frame, and displacement in this case is calculated to estimate a motion vector. A block-based motion vector estimator includes a transformer for dividing the (K-1)th frame and the Kth frame into blocks having NxN pixels and transforming the blocks through DCT or wavelet transform, and a frame memory for storing the transform result of the (K-1)th frame. The estimator further includes a motion estimator for receiving the transformed blocks of the Kth frame, deciding the search region with the size of WxW (W>N) in the (K-1)th frame stored in the frame memory, finding NxN block having optimum similarity for NxN block in the Kth frame in the search region of the (K-1)th frame, and calculating displacement in this case to estimate a motion vector. |
