PURPOSE: A portable memory and a mail checking method is provided to store sent or received mails at a remote mail box accessible over a network, and to simply access the remote mail box by using the portable memory. CONSTITUTION: The device comprises a certification key storage(232), an automatic access software storage(234), a certification software storage(235), and a mail software storage(236). The certification key storage(232) records data for certifying an access authority to a remote computer system. The data is given from the remote computer system, and its corresponding key is stored at the remote computer system. The automatic access software storage(234) automatically connects a local computer to the remote computer system over a network. The certification software storage(235) executes the automatic access software if the portable memory is inserted at the local computer, reads the certification key from the portable memory, and transmits the read certification key to the remote computer system. The mail software storage(236) loads a newly written mail, to be sent to others, on a mail box of the remote computer system or downloads the mail from the mail box.
