PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium in which the mechanical strength, the electromagnetic transducing characteristics, and the dimensional stability are high, and which can realize a high recording density. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium includes a long nonmagnetic supporting body 1 having the main component of an aromatic polyimide and the thickness of about 2.0-10.0μm, a magnetic layer 3 formed on the first side of the nonmagnetic supporting body 1 in which a signal is linearly recorded and reproduced in the longitudinal direction, and a reinforcement film 2 formed between the nonmagnetic supporting body and the magnetic layer and/or on the second side of the nonmagnetic supporting body, including a metal or a semimetal, and having the overall thickness of about 4-1000 nm. The Young's modulus of the stacked body including the nonmagnetic supporting body, the magnetic layer, and a reinforcement film with respect to the longitudinal direction is about 7-20 GPa, the Young's modulus with respect to the width direction is about 4-15 GPa, and the moisture expansion rate with respect to the width direction is equal to or less than about 0.001%.
