PURPOSE: To perform tilt control at a compact pickup in a disk of a wide physical format. CONSTITUTION: A light from a laser diode 26 is converted into parallel lights by a collimator lens 34, reflected toward an objective lens 40 by a reflection mirror 38, and passed through the objective lens to form an image. The reflected light from the disk is passed through the collimator lens and a polarizing splitter 30 to be made incident on a light receiving sensor 60. In an optional radial position of the disk, disk tilt or lens tilt is detected where amplitude of a push- pull signal of the light receiving sensor becomes maximum. Then, during signal recording or reproducing, the tilting amount (inclining angle) of the disk or the lens is set in accordance with a radial position.
