PURPOSE: A method and an apparatus for automatically detecting scene change in motion picture data are provided to prevent erroneous detection of scene change according to automatic binarization based on a local statistical value of video feature. CONSTITUTION: A predetermined distribution function that indicates brightness distribution of pixels for each frame in video data is obtained. A histogram distance between neighboring frames is calculated on the basis of the distribution function. A threshold for each frame is obtained base on the histogram distance(103). The histogram distance is compared with the threshold and a predetermined minimum histogram distance and, when the histogram distance is larger than the threshold and the minimum histogram distance, the video data is selected as cut(105).
