PURPOSE: A mobile terminal using a touch pad is provided to separately configure the touch pad and a display, and to use an entire touch region of the touch pad for inputting characters, thereby widely applying an inputting region of the touch pad. CONSTITUTION: A touch pad(11) includes a button unit and a touch unit for inputting numbers, symbols, and general and cursive characters. A controller(20) recognizes that number inputting, general character inputting, and cursive character inputting modes are selected, and enters the selected inputting modes, then compares a touch input with information of a memory region in the corresponding inputting modes. The controller(20) decodes the information, controls each unit according to the decoded information, and controls a screen outputting of the decoded information. A display(12) outputs the corresponding information on a screen under the control of the controller(20).
