PURPOSE: A relay is provided to obtain the magnetic force necessary for the relay operation by overlapping the magnetic force of an electromagnet and the magnetic force of a permanent magnet. CONSTITUTION: An electromagnet(90) includes a core which is formed with a coil(94), a plurality of horizontal portions(91,91'), and a plurality of vertical portions(92,92'). Terminals A, B, and C are drawn from the coil(94). The terminal C is used as a common terminal. The electric power is selectively applied between the terminals A and C or the terminals B and C. The coil(94) is used for changing inversely the direction of magnetic field when the electric power is applied between the terminals A and C or the terminals B and C. The coil(94) is wound around the horizontal portions(91,91'). The vertical portions(92,92') are used for inducing the magnetic field to a magnetic path of a permanent magnet(83). One pole of the permanent magnet(83) is arranged adjacently to the outsides of the vertical portions(92,92'). The other pole of the permanent magnet(83) is arranged adjacently to the insides of the vertical portions(92,92').
