The bar is covered by a slider strip (2) with slots (22) for the bolts, the strip being fastened to the edge of the door or window by screws (6, 7) engaging with expanding dowels (4, 5) that have enlarged heads (17) fitting into recesses (14, 15) in a spacer (3). The spacer is designed to hold the sliding bolt bar away from the frame edge, to guide it and to hold the expanding dowels; its recesses have points that engage with the dowel heads and prevent them rotating. The spacer can also be made with a concave inner surface so that its recesses grip the dowel heads when it is flattened out as the screws are tightened, or it can have polygonal recesses to match polygonal heads on the dowels.
