Multi-point lock consists of a bar (1) with two or more hook-shaped bolts (21) that slides along the vertical edge (26) of a door or window so that the bolts engage with catch plates in an adjoining frame. The bar is covered by a slider strip (2) with slots (22) for the bolts, the strip being fastened to the edge of the door or window by screws (6, 7) engaging with expanding dowels (4, 5) that have enlarged heads (17) fitting into recesses (14, 15) in a spacer (3). The spacer is designed to hold the sliding bolt bar away from the frame edge, to guide it and to hold the expanding dowels; its recesses have points that engage with the dowel heads and prevent them rotating. The spacer can also be made with a concave inner surface so that its recesses grip the dowel heads when it is flattened out as the screws are tightened, or it can have polygonal recesses to match polygonal heads on the dowels.
