PURPOSE: A character input apparatus of a mobile terminal and a method thereof are provided to reduce the number of input keys of the mobile terminal, thereby implementing miniaturization of a terminal. CONSTITUTION: A selection menu unit selects a predetermined character in an initial state. Upper, lower, left and right moving keys(20) perform the movement toward upper, lower, left and right directions in order to select menu unit in the selection menu. A selection key(50) selects characters by moving the upper, lower, left and right moving keys in the selection menu unit. The characters includes numbers, Korean, English, and special characters. The selection menu includes a number input menu, a Korean input menu, an English input menu and a special character input menu.
