PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To form a homogeneous coating film having a uniform film thickness by eliminating the coating application unevenness occurring in the intrusion of air bubbles, the pulsating flow in circulating flow rate, the local flowing out of the coating film, the burst of air, etc., with the conventional coating applicator for electrophotographic photoreceptors. SOLUTION: This coating applicator has a coating application vessel having a coating liquid for forming the coating film of a photosensitive layer on the outside surface of a cylindrical substrate by an immersion coating application method, a coating liquid circulating mechanism consisting of recovery piping for recovering the coating liquid overflowing from this coating application vessel and refeeding the coating liquid to the coating application vessel, a storage tank, and storage piping and feed piping and a lifting mechanism for immersing the cylindrical substrate into the coating application vessel. The above coating applicator has the storage tank having the volume at which the increasing width of a storage liquid level when the overflowing coating liquid corresponding to the maximum immersion volume of the cylindrical substrate is housed therein attains the value within 10 cm.
