PURPOSE: A sliding mode controlling apparatus and method are provided to be capable of satisfying more than two requirements without confliction when controlling an elastic system such as a spring mass system. CONSTITUTION: In the device, the exhaust valve(1) includes a valve shaft(4), a valve body(2) located at one end of the valve shaft(4), a lower spring(14) corresponding to the first elastic member, an upper spring(24) corresponding to the second elastic member, and an electromagnetic actuator(30) for reciprocating the valve shaft(4) in a cylinder head(10). An exhaust port(18) is formed in the cylinder head(10). The exhaust port(18) communicates with a combustion chamber(17). A valve seat(16) is formed at the opening of the exhaust port(18). The valve body(2) is received by the valve seat(16). That is, as the valve shaft(4) reciprocates, the valve body(2) separates from and contacts the valve seat(16), which opens and closes the exhaust port(18).
