The device has a shoe to engage with a timing chain. A hydraulic tension unit (50) has a plunger (56) with a distal end (58) engaging on the shoe. The plunger moves in an aperture (54) in the tension unit body. The aperture contains oil and a spring to damper a chain load, which is transmitted by shoe and plunger. A spring-controlled oil pressure release unit is in active connection with the aperture to drain the oil (80), when this is charged to a level above a set value, by movement of the plunger into the aperture. This permits further movement of the plunger in the aperture to regulated loads applied to the timing chain.
