PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the productivity in the method for manufacturing a display element using two or more kinds (layers) of gels and to improve the accuracy for the manufacture of pixels. SOLUTION: The display element has a light transmitting display substrate 1 and a non-display substrate 2 opposing to the display substrate 1. At least a liquid 3 and chemical gels 14, 24 which deform according to an electric field are present between the display substrate 1 and the non-display substrate 2 so that the incident light is controlled by using the deformation of the chemical gels 14, 24 by the electric field to perform display when the light is emitted. In the method for manufacturing the display element having at least two or more layers of chemical gels 14, 24 deposited between the display substrate 1 and the non-display substrate 2, the layered body of at least two or more chemical gels 14, 24 consists of a layered body of two or more physical gels containing reactive substances and solvents.
