PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a chemically stable liquid crystal compound having a large negative dielectric anisotropy, a high resistivity, a high voltage holding ratio and a high compatibility with other liquid crystal compounds, and also to provide a liquid crystal composition containing the compound and a liquid crystal display element containing the composition. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal compound is represented by formula (1) (wherein, Ra and Rb are independently a 1-20C alkyl group in which -O- or the like may substitute for -CH2 -; at least one of rings A<1> , A<2> , A<3> and A<4> is a 1,4-phenylene represented by formula (2-1) or (2-2), and the other rings are cyclohexane-1,4-diyl which may have halogen substitutions; Z<1> , Z<2> and Z<3> are independently a single bond or a bifunctional group such as-(CH2 )2 -; m and n are each independently 0 or 1). The liquid crystal composition containing the compound and the liquid crystal display element containing the composition are also provided.
