Motor vehicle safety device (10) such as a luggage space cover or separating net comprises a flexible material wound around a winding shaft and positioned in a housing which is removably fixed on at least one fixing point (12), e.g. on the side of the vehicle or on a vehicle component, by at least one fixing element (25a, 25b, 26a, 26b) in a mounting position. A tension device (29a) assigned to the fixing element is moved from an at least partly relaxed state into a tensioned state by an operating element (16) producing a pre-tension between the housing and the fixing point. The tension device permanently remains in the tensioned state in the housing in the mounting position. The tension device has a locking device securing the tension device in the tensioned state.
