PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new method for oligomerizing anα-olefin suppressing production of a high-molecular polymer keeping the activity of the catalyst. SOLUTION: This method for oligomerizing theα-olefin in the presence of the catalyst comprising a chromium compound containing a chromium- pyrrolyl linkage and an alkylaluminum compound is provided, wherein the amount of the alkylaluminum compound to be used is >=20 mmol per g of the chromium compound. By this method, theα-olefin, especially ethylene, can be oligomerized to selectively obtain a product consisting mainly of the trimer in high yield while suppressing producing the corresponding high-molecular polymer, therefore significantly affording industrial advantage.
