PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a flaky graphite cast iron for restraining wear of a tool, which shows abrasion resistance principally in a high speed machining region. SOLUTION: The objective flaky graphite cast iron includes Mg in a range of 0.005 wt.% or more but less than 0.025 wt.% as an additive, which is added in melting of the cast iron so as to remain therein for improving machinability of the cast iron. The cast iron may further include Al, as needed, in the range of 0.005 wt.% or more but 0.02 wt.% or less as an additive so as to leave it. As the result of the above addition, a protective film with a high melting point can be formed on the surface of a machining tool, due to Mg, or Mg and Al, when the tool machines the cast iron at high speed.
