PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically set the interval between a body 5 being printed, e.g. a bankbook, and the print end part 7 of a print head 6 in a serial dot printer atΔL0 suitable for printing regardless of the thickness of the body 5 being printed. SOLUTION: A detection member 55 can be set or switched to be displaceable upward, with respect to a carriage 9 fixed with a print head, from a first position where the detection end part 81 of the detection member is driven by a detection member drive means 56 to be separated from a platen and elevated above the print end part in the print made of an interlock mechanism 57, and a second position closer to the platen than the print end part where the detection end part 81 is lowered in detection mode. A position detecting means 151 detects the positions G0 and G1 of the print head when the detection end part of the detection member abuts on the platen and a body being printed in the detection mode. In the print mode, a predetermined intervalΔL0 suitable for printing is set by the elevating/lowering displacement of the carriage 9 using the detected positions G0 and G1. The detection member drive means 56 comprises the interlock mechanism 57 and a parallelogramatic link mechanism 58.
