PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect home position of a recording head accurately. SOLUTION: A recording head mounted on a carriage traveling along a platen records an image on a sheet S carried between the recording head and a platen, a single reflective photosensor 32 through which the recording head can detect a home position detecting part 34 representative of a home position HP and a sheet S is carried on a carriage, and the home position detecting part is provided on the platen where it can face the photosensor. In such a printer 10, the home position detecting part is composed of a material having a reflectivity different from that of the sheet.
