Signal storage or transponder chip has an antenna so that it can be remotely read and programmed. According to the invention the chip is enclosed in a massive protection body that also contains the antenna. Typically the body is an injection molded plastic or ceramic body. The invention also relates to use of the encased transponder chip for identification of articles that are to be subjected to processing in hostile environments.
