A process for vitrifying contaminated waste material (30) includes providing a container (10) including an insulating lining (16), placing the waste materi al (30) in the lined container (10), subjecting the material (30) to an electri c current to heat and melt the material (30), cooling the molten material to form a solid vitrified mass, and disposing said mass. The mass is disposed while contained in the container (10). The insulating lining (16) may compri se one or more layers of a thermal insulating material (19), one or more layers of refractory material (18), or a combination thereof.
