A method of cutting gears consists in that the spaces between the teeth are cut by several successive blades of different profiles, which blades are operative one at a time and of which one cuts through to the base of the tooth space. Rack-teeth may be finish-cut by such a cutter but, for spur and bevel gears, an approximate tooth-space is roughed out. The teeth of the cutter shown in Fig. 1 cut on the lower edges, the bottom-cutting blade being duplicated on each side of the cutter, but those shown in Fig. 2, cut only on their side faces with the exception of the bottom-cutting blade 42. In a cutter for bevel gears, the upper blade 48, Fig. 3, is designed to widen the tooth-space at the outer periphery as shown at 49, Fig. 4.
