PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an optically active 6-halogeno-3- oxo-5-hydroxyhexanoic acid derivative by easy operation without needing a cryogenic reactor and an incubator. SOLUTION: An optically active 6-halogeno-3,5-dihydroxyhexanoic acid derivative is produced by asymmetrically hydrogenating the optically active 6- halogeno-3-oxo-5-hydroxyhexanoic acid derivative using very inexpensive hydrogen as a reducing agent in the presence of a catalyst of a RuBr2 BIANP complex prepared from a ruthenium-optically active phosphine complex, particularly an optically active phosphine 2,2'-bisdiarylphophino-1,1'-binaphthyl (BINAP) and a ruthenium complex.
