PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To design a large space settable above knees of a shock absorbing tilt steering column and to improve an energy absorbing structure. SOLUTION: The height of a side plate part 3a of an upper clamp 3 is set in a range that at least the lower end of the side plate part 3a does not come out of the lowermost surface P of a column jacket when a tilt bolt 13 moves to an uppermost part of an oval hole 3f for tilting formed on the side plate part 3a. A distance bracket 11 is arranged in a space of an upper part of the column jacket formed in the upper clamp 3. An energy absorbing member 12 engages with the tilt bolt 13 at a rear end part thereof and front end part thereof is formed of a metal plate extending forward from the distance bracket 11 by a designated length.A part of the metal plate is bent and raised at a desired length and is combined with the distance bracket 11. |
